Inspiring Hope, Improving Health and Healing Communities

THE CHALLENGE

UNC Rex Healthcare and CMS Controls met to discuss the planned new heart and vascular facility at Rex Hospital. The new building was in the planning stages and set to be the premier Heart and Vascular Hospital in North Carolina, situated prominently in front of their main campus in Raleigh.

During the meeting, the UNC Rex Healthcare Facility Manager described the requirements and expectations for this new facility. The hospital requested that the building automation system controlling the lighting and HVAC equipment integrate seamlessly into the current main campus platform, that adequate training and resources be provided throughout the life of the system, and that the project be completed on time and within budget.

THE SOLUTION

Several years prior to this project, the hospital partnered with CMS Controls to successfully migrate away from the legacy, proprietary control system in their main facility. In keeping with that objective in this new facility, CMS Controls engineered and installed a Distech Controls solution including a web-based user interface. All necessary sequences for humidity, temperature and space pressure control were incorporated to meet the stringent requirements necessary in medical facilities of this caliber. Additionally, the Air Valve System in the Operating Rooms , Intensive Care Units and Patient Isolation Rooms were fully integrated into this Distech building automation system to all the facility staff to centrally control all aspects of the building’s critical HVAC systems while ensuring the patients could focus on their health and recovery.

CMS Controls maintained the aggressive construction schedule throughout the project by properly managing hardware delivery, software development and overall system implement on. As the project reached completion and the systems were successfully verified by a third party commissioning agent, CMS Controls trained the facility staff on the intuitive graphics, alarming, scheduling and trending capabilities of the Distech system. Today, CMS Controls preforms periodic and proactive maintenance on the building automation system to ensure the facility continues to operate efficiently and comfortably as originally designed and commissioned. Additionally, UNC Rex Healthcare relies on CMS Controls’ dedicated service team for 24/7 support of this critical facility.
